Company Description:

Established in 1887 by William S. Merwin, a retired oysterman from Milford, CT, who bought the property from Capt. Thomas Richards.

Four generations of Merwins operated Edenlawn: first as a pineapple plantation, then as a commercial nursery and fernery, then as a seasonal vacation resort with a full service restaurant (1953-1978), and finally as a long term rental "artists' colony" (translation: this was the "divorce capital of Stuart and Jensen Beach", e.g., where you went to wait for your divorce to come through.)

David Childs purchased/inherited the property when "Duke" Merwin (the great-grandson of the founding Merwin) when Duke died in 1991. He and his (then) wife Patti operated the property as a long term rental community until we purchased the Plantation in mid-2005.
